How to Draw a Square

This is an instructional video about how you can draw a square by dividing a circle into quarters.  You may think that there are easier ways to draw a square, but you can use the same technique to draw lots of more interesting shapes too.  See the polygons we drew!

 

Now here's a challenge:  Can you name all of these polygons?  We had to google some of them!

The Gospel in Gestures

As part of our R.E. curriculum we have been learning about the Sacraments and how they are celebrated.  We have talked about signs, symbols, special words, and special gestures.

As part of learning about "gestures" we read  Matthew 25:34-46 and then tried to act out using gestures what Jesus spoke about..

34 “Then the King will speak to those on his right. He will say, ‘My Father has blessed you. Come and take what is yours. It is the kingdom prepared for you since the world was created. 35 I was hungry. And you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty. And you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger. And you invited me in. 36 I needed clothes. And you gave them to me. I was sick. And you took care of me. I was in prison. And you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the people who have done what is right will answer him. ‘Lord,’ they will ask, ‘when did we see you hungry and feed you? When did we see you thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you as a stranger and invite you in? When did we see you needing clothes and give them to you?39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. Anything you did for one of the least important of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘You are cursed! Go away from me into the fire that burns forever. It has been prepared for the devil and his angels.42 I was hungry. But you gave me nothing to eat. I was thirsty. But you gave me nothing to drink. 43 I was a stranger. But you did not invite me in. I needed clothes. But you did not give me any. I was sick and in prison. But you did not take care of me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty and not help you? When did we see you as a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison and not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. Anything you didn’t do for one of the least important of these, you didn’t do for me.’

46 “Then they will go away to be punished forever. But those who have done what is right will receive eternal life.”

Our Busy Lives!

As a class we brainstormed what we've been doing in the past two weeks.  This is what we came up with in just a few minutes:

• We made periscopes for Mr O'Regan's science changeover

• We logged into our school Google accounts and learned about sharing documents

• We wrote a proposal for our homework "Passion Project"

• The Year 5 students went to "Taster Days" at St Joseph's and Mater Christie

• All of the girls also visited Mater Christie to use their Art facilities and work with older girls.

• We prepared for Mother's Day by writing persuasive texts about "Why My Mum is the Best" and treated our Mothers to a very special High Tea in the school hall.  We also bought presents from the  Mothers' Day stall

• We have been practising Christian Meditation after play several times a week.

• In our Class Sport times we have played t-ball and kickball and we found out our teams for the Winter Inter-school Sports.  Running Club has been running tryouts for Cross Country

• NAPLAN tests are next week and we have been doing some practice in class time

• We helped our Prep Buddies log onto the computers and complete some Mathletics tasks

• Flynn, Jocelyn and Chloe have celebrated their birthdays

• Paris, Liam, James, Sophia, Jake , Elizabeth, Hayden, Brendon, Emily, and Joc had their birthdays earlier in the year!

We rolled a single 10-sided dice about 100 times.  We graphed the result and it looked like this:

Welcome to Our Blog!!

We are 22 excited children and one VERY excited teacher as we start to share our learning journey with family, friends and the world!  The purpose of our blog is to share what we are learning in the classroom, and to interact with people about the content of our lessons.

Seed Day for IBL

This week we had one extra-special day.  Wednesday 22/4 was our "Seed Day" for our Inquiry Based Learning topic.  The topic we are studying this term is based around Science, Design and Technology, so the "seeds" that were planted involved lots of Science activities. We experimented with mirrors, magnets, balloons, building sets, circuit boards, test tubes and many other fascinating things.  These are some images from our special day.

Mr O'Regan showed slow motion video of corn popping.

We made electrical circuits using "Brain Boxes"

We propelled a balloon along a string.

We made a chemical reaction between bicarbonate of soda and lemon juice

We tried to build a 120cm tower using the least number of straw.  The lowest number was 9!!

We tried to use a mirror to make a reflection which matched a target.  It was hard!

We drew mazes and guided magnets through them.

We had to guide the magnet from under the table by following instructions

Before the seed day we asked everyone in our class to list their "Top Ten Human Innovations".  We had a lot of very imaginative responses.  Many students listed medical services (such as bionic body parts or the blood bank), emergency services, transport innovations (such as cars and planes), or communications technology (like phones, computers, and the internet).  There were some very thoughtful responses, such as "map" or "compass", "money", "clocks" and "rubbish tips".
